NÚRIA VALLEY & BESALÚ

Highlights

Núria Valley & Besalú

Núria is one of the prettiest valleys in the Pyrenees, surrounded by mountains like Puigmal (2.913m) or Noucreus (2.799m). Its sanctuary is located at an altitude of 2.000m and is one of the most important pilgrimage points in Catalonia.

A 90 year old rack railway is the most popular way to get to Núria. Inaugurated in 1931, it quickly became a reference for european mountain trains. Every year, almost 300.000 visitors enjoy beautiful and amazing landscape along its 12.5 km itinerary, including an elevation change of 1.000 meters on its 40 minutes journey.

Besalú

Besalú is a crossroads and medieval fortress located between two rivers, Fluvià and Capellades.

It used to be the capital of an independent earldom and hosts one of the best preserved historic and artistic medieval ensembles, including churches and monuments from the XII century.

It's also worth mentioning the jewish quarter and the Micvé (ritual bath house), also from the XII century.

Another vestige from the ancient Earldom of Besalú is the XI century stone bridge over Fluvià river, welcoming visitors to the medieval old quarter.
