WALKING IN THE COSTA BRAVA

Highlights

La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park

La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park covers 15.000ha area. It has a very characteristic orography, ground and climate, and hosts a varied and lush vegetation, with holm oak, beech and oak forests, including the very popular 'Fageda d'en Jordà'. The park has many hiking itineraries and therapy forests, being an ideal place to enjoy nature and active tourism.

It also hosts museum spaces, like the ones in Montsacopa, Sant Marc i del Puig Roig, Croscat, Rocanegra and Santa Margarida volcanoes. They are places of special interest, where you can discover important aspects of the natural park.

Besalú

Besalú is a crossroads and medieval fortress located between two rivers, Fluvià and Capellades.

It used to be the capital of an independent earldom and hosts one of the best preserved historic and artistic medieval ensembles, including churches and monuments from the XII century.

It's also worth mentioning the jewish quarter and the Micvé (ritual bath house), also from the XII century.

Another vestige from the ancient Earldom of Besalú is the XI century stone bridge over Fluvià river, welcoming visitors to the medieval old quarter.

Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park

The Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park is the second most important wetlands in Catalonia. It hosts a wide variety of fauna, mainly birds looking for shelter and rest during their migrations. 329 bird species have been spotted, with 82 of them nesting regularly, many of them protected and of greaty beauty.

Greek/Roman ruins of Empúries

The ruins of Empúries are the only archeological site in the Iberian peninsula where remains of the greek civilization and of a roman city can be visited at the same time. It has a monographic museum and offers cultural activities, such as dramatized visits, family workshops, music shows or virtual tours.

Dalí Theater-Museum

Opened in 1974 in Figueres, Dalí Theater-Museum was projected and dessigned by the artist himself. The whole building has a dreamlike, phantasmagoric and surreal atmosphere devised by Salvador Dalí. It hosts artworks of the artist, showing a panoramic vision of his trajectory, with pieces and rooms created specifically for the museum standing out among them.

Girona

In Girona you can travel back 2000 years, thanks to 2 fortified enclosures: "La Força Vella" (roman foundation) and the "Medieval Eixample", the extension of the city walls during 14th and 15th centuries; including a great artistic and monumental heritage.

Its crown jewel is the Jewish Quarter, with astonishing narrow streets, fortified squares, exultant baroque spaces and "Noucentisme" styled buildings (an early 20th century catalan cultural movement organised largely as a reaction against modernism).

One of the most iconic and spectacular images of the city, are the Onyar river houses and its popular bridges, including the one designed by the Eiffel House.

Cadaqués

Cadaqués is one of the most beautiful and iconic villages in the Costa Brava. Its geographic isolation until 19th century has preserved Cadaqués fishing village essence, with narrow streets and white houses. It was one of the greatest inspirations of Salvador Dalí, who used to live in Portlligat, where you can visit the Dalí House-Museum.
