EIXAMPLE & MODERNISM

Morning tour: Rational urbanism & architectural extravaganza

After the demolition of the medieval city walls in the 19th century and the urbanization of the Eixample (meaning Extension) devised by the visionaire engineer Ildefons Cerdà, Barcelona entered the modern era and set the foundation of the metropoly we know today. Born to accommodate the local bourgeoisie, the new city was vertebrated around Passeig de Gràcia, which became the new central axis. The aspirations of a wealthy burgeoisie, focused in the catalan cultural autonomy, allowed a new generation of architects and exceptional artists (led by Antoni Gaudí, Josep Puig i Cadafalch and Lluis Domènech i Montaner) to maximize their creativity and become the key of modernism blooming in Barcelona.

Return trip home in the afternoon.
